Wigan welcomes Bus Watch Police Specials
Wigan Bus Station welcomed the first deployment of dedicated Bus Watch Special Constables on Monday 17 August. Led by a Police Officer from GM Police and consisting of staff from GMPTE, First and Stagecoach, their aims are to reassure passengers and frontline staff, deter anti-social or violent behaviour and detect transport related crime.
During the course of this first shift, the Specials spoke to many passengers and did continual patrols of the station – keeping a high visibility presence at all times. As well as dealing with a few trouble makers, the Officers were also introduced to all staff on site and were able to speak to several drivers – explaining their role and the aims of this new initiative.
Similar patrols will be carried out at other PTE bus stations and routes operated by First and Stagecoach on an ongoing basis for the foreseeable future.
